The Journey to the Perfect Solder Paste Print: Re-Engineering the Desktop SMT Stencil Printer
For hardware startups, makers, and electronics hobbyists, desktop Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is a double-edged sword. You want the precision of industrial assembly lines, but your budget and workspace limit you to manual tools.
At AFARCO, we’ve spent years working alongside the DIY SMT and OpenPnP communities. We noticed that one of the biggest bottlenecks in the entire prototyping process wasn’t the pick-and-place machine itself—it was the humble solder paste printing process.
Today, we want to share the journey of how we re-engineered the desktop stencil printer, moving from frustrating manual hinges to a fully automated, motorized vertical-lift solution.
Part 1: The Smeared Solder Paste Problem (The Fatal Flaw of Hinge Jigs)
If you have ever assembled a PCB at home, you’ve likely used a basic manual stencil jig. These entry-level tools rely on a simple flip-up hinge (bản lề lật).
While cheap and easy to make, they carry a massive technical flaw: angular motion.

When you lift a stencil on a hinge, the frame swings upward in an arc. This diagonal movement naturally drags the edges of the stencil apertures across the freshly printed solder paste.
For large components (like 1206 resistors), this might go unnoticed. But for modern, fine-pitch footprints like QFNs, BGAs, or 0402 passives, this angular release causes:
- Smeared pads (causing solder bridges).
- Blurry definitions (leading to tombstoning or weak joints).
- The "vacuum effect" (pulling the paste completely out of the apertures).
Part 2: The AFARCO Solution — Phase 1: Precision Mechanical Vertical Lift
We set out to eliminate the hinge entirely. Our goal was to design a robust, DIY-friendly printer that brings industrial-grade release kinematics to the desktop.
We engineered the first prototype of the AFARCO DIY Stencil Printer with two core mechanical upgrades:
1. 100% True Vertical Lift
Instead of a hinge, we mounted the stencil frame to a vertical Z-axis guided by precision lead screws.

When you lift the stencil, it moves perfectly perpendicular (90 degrees) relative to the PCB. This clean separation ensures that the solder paste bricks are released cleanly, leaving razor-sharp, uniform deposits on every single pad.
2. X and Y-Axis Micro-Adjustment
To match the precision of the vertical lift, we integrated smooth vít me (lead screw) micro-adjustments for the X and Y axes. Instead of manually nudging your PCB and hoping for the best, you can now align fine-pitch PCBs to the stencil with sub-millimeter precision by simply turning a few knobs.
Part 3: Phase 2: Eliminating the Human Factor with Automation
While our mechanical vertical-lift printer was a massive upgrade, we realized one variable still remained: the human hand.
When cranking a manual lead screw to lift the stencil:
- If you lift too fast, you risk creating a vacuum that pulls the paste off the pads.
- If you lift too slow, or if your hand trembles, you can still ruin a sensitive print.
To achieve absolute repeatability, the separation velocity must be perfectly uniform.
Introducing the Motorized AFARCO Z-Axis Controller
We are thrilled to announce that we have successfully integrated a dedicated electronic controller and stepper motor drive into our vertical lift system!
Now, the manual crank is gone. With a single button press:
- The Stepper Motor Takes Over: It drives the Z-axis lead screws at a pre-programmed, ultra-smooth speed.
- Dynamic Separation Rate: The controller starts with a slow, controlled "peel" rate to safely release the paste, then accelerates to clear the stencil quickly.
- Perfect Consistency: Whether it’s your 1st print or your 100th of the day, the release speed is exactly the same, yielding flawless SMT prints every time.
